Gaming Rig...Opinions?

Postby Adams » 22 Jun 2016, 18:05

As some of you may have read I'm currently in the process of building a new gaming PC (PC MASTER RACE!!!), and I was wondering what you all run for cpu, gpu, etc, to get a general idea of what I can expect in terms of FPS from said components, and to minimize spending while maintaining a decent FPS rate (say 30+) in 1080(yes I know most of its server dependent). Currently I've purchased an Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1, and 16gb of G SKill Ripjaws DDr4 RAM to go with it, all in a cooler master mid size tower. I have my eyes on an intel i5 6600K CPU(3.5GHZ), and a EVGA GeForce 960 FTW GPU. Any ideas or opinions are welcomed...

6600K sounds right, you should easily be able to push it to 4.5GHz. New GPUs are out, so maybe you can get a used 970 for cheaper, or just go for an AMD RX480. Make sure you get an SSD.

4.5 GHz is good enough for me, honestly I figured maybe 4 GHz overclocked out of that processor, even with it being their K version. Hmmmm, AMD never really thought about that I guess, always heard they have overheating problems probably just fanboy babble, their biggest thing for me with the RX480 (200$) :o is the price point, but ill guess ill have to wait to see the actual retailer numbers. There wont be an issue with compatibility do you think? (excuse my ignorance). What do you think SSD in combo with HDD or just SSD will suffice?

with the motherboard you have you can only go Intel iirc and its better imo to do a SSD & HDD combo unless you have a shit ton of money.

HDD - https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop- ... =pcpapi-20

If you need more space then get a bigger one

Thanks guys, I'm most definitely am going to be going with that i5, and I am going to shop around for a new GPU, whats your opinion on AMD GPU's specifically the one Ampers mentioned paired with my ASUS mobo, and im not looking to cheap out just want the best performance and reliability for mid tier gameplay. And I appreciate those links Eversmann ill more than likely end up buying those.

hmm gpu i like the 960 4gb but you can get a 1070 for i think 100 or so more but 1070 is second best out there. AMD cards are good but the performance is no where near nvidia the newest amd card is only half the performance of the newest nvidia but for its price of 200$ and the 1070 is 379$ compared to 1080's 800$ it might be worth it but again thats up to you.

heres some links you can use to study and compare.

I'd definitely go with GTX1070. It's new, so it has the latest technologies inside. And price-to-power coef is great.

I see what you mean eversmann & truly, but I just checked the price on the 1070 and it's in the 500 range (I'm guessing becuase of the demand) and I do like 960 4gb (3.5gb lol) I think I might just hold off with the gpu for now, just ordered a cooler Master psu today, that should keep me busy till the 1070 dips when demand goes down to my budget of 300 to 400, I plan on ordering the i5 Monday. Both cards seem to have a good price to power ratio as you mentioned.

I snagged my 1070 for $430 on Amazon. I used http://www.pcpartpicker.com to organize my list and then just went to amazon, got the parts, ordered, PC parts were all here 2 days later and I am currently using it! :D
Only issue is with the 1070 - mine is on backorder until Jul 19 - Aug 10 so I may not even get it this summer, but it is well worth the wait. (All local stores don't have stock and won't for even longer :/)

If you're looking to get a 1070 you can use http://www.nowinstock.net/ to check. Better hope you're quick on the mouse!

Nice Larson, I decided to go with a gtx 960 FTW to tide me over until the 1070s are more available and the price isn't inflated, it should be plenty enough guts to run Arma 3 at a decent framerate.(most likely will switch to 1070 in a few months as i plan on getting BF1 which looks ehmmm 'graphics intensive' to say the least) Also ordered an i5 6600k, as well as a cryorig cpu cooler, probably will end up switching to a corsair water cooled system given some more time and a larger budget. Now all I need is a decent monitor and an hdd and im ready to rip. I also used PCpartpicker, as well as Newegg, both great sites are great though pcpartpicker is a bit more user friendly and compiles lower prices from different sites. All of which is a good upgrade from running on a laptop (3.0Ghz, 16gb ram, and a mediocre NVIDIA quadro K1100M graphics card)

Not bad at all. With my rig and setup at the moment (i7 6700K 4.0Ghz Base Clock) I can run A3 all Very High with 50FPS (SP, of course) and experience no lag and / or stutter. If you OC your 6600K you could easily get 4.0Ghz, probably 4.5Ghz. With that and your GPU you'll be set man :)

for your cpu cooler since your just getting one to tide you over i would check to see if this will work and fit your case. Also you do not need water cooling unless your going to heavy OC your system.
