I'm guessing despite the more limited FOV they are probably lighter and also a lot more readily available/more quickly replaced.

Also note the one-eyed NV devices. They allow the use of scopes & sights alongside them which regular NVGs will not. This is actually something we don't really consider. In Arma with a lot of non-NV-scopes you can simply "switch on NV" regardless by having your NVGs equipped. That's not the way it works. This may be controversial (similar to the perspective issue) but we spend so much effort on authenticity we might as well get that one right. ;-)

There is a setting for it in ACE which, by decision of CStaff, has been turned off.
